Bamboo Tectonics
>Project Introduction
As a group we were tasked with creating a bamboo structure, to be presented with accurate orthographic drawings, models and tattoo stamps. The structure would be built 1:1 with a volume of just 2 cubic metres out of bamboo and be designed based off of ergonomics and anthropometrics as it would be built as a usable space. This assignment is a highlight of the course, being the biggest and most significant project we worked on as students
>Process
We built the structure together, employing the use of power and non-powered tools, using only ropes to bind the joints of the structure. Fishing line was used for the top roof element. To support human weight, we used bamboo poles as supporting struts, creating a frame over which we layed bamboo slats as seats.
>The structure
The final structure built 1:1 scale, measuring 0.8m by 2m by 1.5m and coming at just around 2 cubic metres. It can fit three people in multiple positions.
>Orthographic Drawings
Based on the final structure, we drew up plan, elevations, section, axonometric and exploded axonometric drawings. All were done to 1:10 scale. We added human figures as per instruction to allow easier demonstration of how the space would be used.
>Tattoo Stamps
Based on elements and/or principles from the structure, the group created 10 tattoo stamps, expressing the main concept of the structure, and taking inspiration from the elements used as well as the play on light and shadow
>Reflection
The project was tiring and labour intensive, though offering a clear insight into the practice of construction, as well as teaching the group problem solving skills, as we would need to redesign elements as we built in order to meet the intended functions or to make sure the structure was stable. We learned teamwork and communication, as well as craftsmanship in creating our tectonic structures
